Guided Bird Hikes: 1st Saturday/month
Please join René Corado from the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology for guided bilingual bird hikes the first Saturday of every month starting at 9 a.m.!
Parking spaces are limited, so hikes are capped around 20 and are first come, first served.
René was born in Guatemala. In 1981, at the age of 21, he migrated to California. Mr. Corado has been working at the WFVZ for more than 40 years and he is the Collections Manager since 1996. He has conducted several major field projects on birds in Guatemala from 2001 to present, Costa Rica from 1994-1997, and Ecuador from 1988-1992. His primary field of study is the breeding of Neotropical birds, with special emphasis on descriptions of their eggs and nests. At the present he is conducting nest monitoring for Least Bell’s Vireo on the Santa Clara River.
He is the founder and President of El Lustrador Foundation, which supports low-income children in Guatemala with scholarships so they can study. Author of the book El Lustrador, 2014, declared Cultural Heritage of Guatemala and the bilingual The Adventures of René Corado The Shoeshine Boy. He is the Ambassador of Peace for the government of Guatemala and received The Order of the Quetzal (The Knighthood of the Quetzal) which is the highest honorary distinction granted by the government of Guatemala.
René will be sharing some of his experiences and stories of the nest monitoring work in the Santa Clara River and in the Neotropics; at the same time he will be showing some of the bird species that are present in the Santa Clara River. Join us for a fun morning!
He is bilingual and the hikes can be in Spanish or English. Las caminatas tambien serán en español si se necesita, René habla Español.
