Biography
Ian Thompson is The Nature Conservancy’s Brazil Program Director.
He joined TNC in 2006, and since then has served in multiple leadership roles, including overseeing conservation efforts across the Amazon basin (Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru) through large-scale conservation on indigenous lands, productive landscapes, and public and private protected areas.
After earning a Master’s in Science in Forestry from Oxford University, he embarked upon a career applying forestry expertise to development issues, for more than 10 years in the mountains and plains of Nepal and then in the Brazilian Amazon. Prior to this, he held various leadership positions with the British Department for International Development (DFID) and European Community, as well as consulting roles with a variety of forestry organizations. Ian also served as a manager of Dendrogene, a large-scale research project seeking to promote the genetic conservation of managed forests in the Amazon.
Ian is fluent in English, Portuguese and Nepalese, and proficient in Spanish.
