As associate state director, Scott Comings is responsible for the Rhode Island chapter’s conservation and operations programs. These teams total 15 staff members and focus on chapter day-to-day operations, land acquisition, stewardship, marine research and habitat restoration projects. Scott sits on the RI Core team and works out of the Block Island office.
Scott has 30 years of conservation experience, beginning his career as a field ornithologist for the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. In 1997, he was hired by TNC as the Block Island Program education coordinator. While at TNC he has held positions that include Block Island Program associate director; Block Island Program director; director of science and stewardship; South County real estate specialist; and director of land and freshwater.
During his tenure with TNC, Scott has closed more than 275 real estate projects, managed more than 45 cooperative agreements, managed more than 300 contracts, overseen 20 large-scale construction projects and presented more than 5,500 nature programs to schools and the general public.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in education from Earlham College in 1993. In addition, he is a Master Bird Bander and has written two books about Block Island trails and nature. Scott and his family (Clair, Emma, Freddy, and Gill the dog) reside on Block Island.
