Borneo, a global conservation priority, represents one of the most biodiverse, carbon-rich places on the planet.
Tackling climate change is one of the most important areas of work for The Nature Conservancy (TNC). We are focused on implementing and increasing emphasis on readily available, cost-effective natural climate solutions, such as reforestation, and drive policy changes to accelerate our transition to a clean energy future.
TNC is working through its main partner in Indonesia, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), to propel sustainable development and responsible forestry efforts. From the Wehea Community Forest to the UN Climate Change Conference, TNC is creating comprehensive framework for forest conservation and green gas house emission reduction.
TNC seeks not only to support and equip forest communities to make sustainable resource choices that benefit them, but also to take those successes and replicate them through a dedicated network of conservation and policy partners.
In addition, people and wildlife like orangutans live in and depend on this country’s forests, which makes the rapid rate of deforestation an environmental and human health issue.
To conserve forests and biodiversity, improve the lives of traditional communities and reduce climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions, TNC is advancing the following initiatives:
- Improve the management of 25 million acres of forest, including 1 million acres of critical orangutan habitat.
- Advance a historic green growth compact, a partnership among government, companies and communities to reduce deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Expand tested solutions for sustainable natural resource management, including reduced impact logging carbon and low emission oil palm development.
- Engage rural villages using our Communities Inspiring Action for Change (SIGAP) framework to help them improve village governance, secure rights over their forests and develop diverse forest-friendly livelihood options.
