Biography

In 2016, Sergio was appointed CEO of Banco Santander Brasil, the third largest private bank in the country with more than 34 million customers, 47,000 employees, and total assets over R$700 billion. The institution is part of Santander Group, the largest bank in the Eurozone. During his career, he acquired experience as Global CFO of Cargill, Inc. (Minneapolis, USA), having also joined the board of the company and Cargill's Corporate Leadership Team, in charge of the overall strategy, growth, and funding globally. He started as platform leader in the Food Ingredients business cluster and then became Regional Director for Latin America. Sergio also served as CEO of Marfrig Global Foods, one of the world's largest meat companies.

Sergio’s background in the financial sector started prior to his experience in the food industry. He was Senior Managing Director with Bear Stearns in NY, co-heading Bear's Investment Banking practices, with a focus on international capital markets & M&A. Before that, he served ABN AMRO for 18 years, holding numerous positions in over six countries: CEO Asia Pacific, SVP Client Coverage Europe, President China & Hong Kong, and Head of Emerging Markets Trading Desks. In 2000 he joined ABN AMRO's Board of Directors as the first non-Dutch Board member.


Sergio chairs CNF (Brazil's national financial confederation) and is a member of the FIESP (Sao Paolo's Industrial Federation) strategy advisory board. He also served as Chairman of Carval Investors, LLC, an independently managed fund from Cargill with AUM over US$10 billion. He also served as a board member in Mosaic Fertilizers in the US and Brazil's largest Residential Real Estate Group, Cyrella Brazil Realty, and Delta Airlines.

He has studied both Law and Economics in Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ & UGF), holds an MBA from Brazil's Financial College IBMEC, first alumni class, and several extensive management courses in Insead, Harvard and Wharton.
